Church Size:

Job Type:
Asbury UMC
Job Description:

This position reports to the managing director of discipleship ministries.  Asbury is preparing to significantly enhance our discipleship development efforts.  This will involve some new approaches and very intentional integration throughout the ministries of the church.  Therefore, we are looking for a person with interest and credible experience in multi-faceted, whole-person development.  Exposure to theories of learning, use of technology, and dealing with a multi-generational environment are all pluses.  In addition to Bible study we are particularly interested in personal spiritual practices and in relationships that foster growth.  We are looking for someone to help us think through these new ideas and drive their implementation.  This may involve engaging outside help on a contract basis.

Requirements / Qualifications

  • Full agreement with Asbury's vision and theology.
  • Above average understanding of the Bible and theology.  Agreement with Wesleyan theology.
  • Membership at Asbury.
  • Strategic thinking capability.
  • Ability to understand and work within the big picture of Asbury's strategy.
  • A leadership style that can be successful in an environment in which decisions are not made top-down but rather are developed together with all constituencies.
  • Ability to think about use of technology in all aspects of discipleship development.
  • Willing to look at discipleship development as growth and transformation accomplished by methods beyond what is traditional.  (To be clear, the Bible is central at Asbury.)
  • Effective communicator, both written and verbal presentation.
  • Temperament to work with staff in ministry positions as well as lay leaders and members.
  • Some evening work is required.
  • Regular Sunday morning work.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the development of new components of adult discipleship development.  This will require research and coordination outside of Asbury as well as working with pastors and management within Asbury.
  • Manage execution of existing and new programs.
  • Coordination and collaboration with lay leaders and lay ministry councils.  Facilitation of the decision-making process is as important as the ability to analyze situations and reach productive conclusions.
