Job Description:
I. Position Summary
Dauphin Way United Methodist Church, a large-membership church in midtown Mobile, Alabama, is looking for a minister of children’s discipleship with a heart for reaching and nurturing children and their families with faith, hope, and love. Education and experience in leading a growing, multi-faceted children’s ministry is important. Only applicants with a bachelors degree or higher will be considered. Important traits include a love for Jesus Christ, a servant heart, transformational leadership skills, a desire to work with children, an ability to organize teams of children’s workers, an open hospitable spirit, a strong character, a high level of self-discipline, a concern for social justice, an ability to work within a team approach to ministry, and an eagerness to work in a United Methodist Church.

III. Position Requirements
Preferred: Masters Degree in Christian education or comparable graduate degree.
Minimum: Bachelors Degree in Children’s Education or comparable degree.

Preferred: Ordained in, seeking ordination in, or meets requirements for ordination in, the United Methodist Church. Ordination in other Christian Church.
Note: If candidate is not ordained, a background check and psychological review will be required.

Significant work experience on staff of an effective, growing children’s ministry.
Management experience, preferably in educational field.


Bible: Comprehensive knowledge of the Bible and extensive understanding of basic Biblical concepts.

Church: Knowledge of the basic beliefs and polity of the Christian Church and of the United Methodist Church in particular, including worship, theology, and church history.

Child Development: Comprehensive understanding of the developmental, spiritual, and emotional needs of children. Familiarity with and experience in using effective educational tools to teach children.

Skills and Gifts:

Ability to work within a team concept of ministry at every level.
Ability to help develop and articulate a vision for children’s ministry, consistent with the church’s vision of discipleship.
Ability to develop innovative, creative approaches in children’s Christian education.
Ability to recruit, train, organize, engage, and motivate a cohesive team of staff and volunteers in children’s discipleship ministries.
Ability to manage conflict in helpful, honest, redemptive ways.
Ability and desire to devote 50 hours weekly to children’s discipleship ministry.

Strong, mature, growing faith in Jesus Christ.
Ability to share faith, hope, and love through personal witness and testimony.
Ability to demonstrate by precept and example matters of salvation, discipleship, social justice, and stewardship.
Desire to serve Jesus Christ in a United Methodist Church.

Love for children and for spending time with them regularly.
Ability to convey Biblical knowledge and concepts to children in compelling ways.
Ability to nurture families of children and to identify and respond to their varied needs.
Ability to work in healthy ways on a large church staff.

Ability to write and speak effectively.
Ability to market children’s discipleship ministries effectively.
Ability to recruit, train, and manage staff and volunteers.
Ability to plan and manage effective use of resources, including time and finances.
Competence in computer and other relevant technologies.
