Job Description:

Position Overview: The primary focus of the Director of Worship and Music is to nurture and develop the heart of worship at Ashburn Presbyterian Church and serve as a catalyst to lead the congregation into the presence of the Lord through worship experiences.  This position has oversight and major responsibility for all worship experiences and services (including seasonal services) as described in the Areas of Responsibility below.

 

Job Requirements: 

Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in music or Bachelor’s degree with music related course work; 

Music abilities:  proficiency and experience with playing piano/keyboard, conducting and directing vocal groups/ instrumentalists, and singing to include harmonizing and sight reading

 

Preferred but not required: Ability to play the organ; experience with conducting handbells; ability to arrange, compose, transcribe music

 

Annual Salary Range:  $45,000 to 60,000

Position Status: Fulltime paid staff.

 

Areas of Responsibility:

Worship Ministry Planning

  • Ultimately responsible for the planning and execution of all worship experiences and services.
  • Lead long-range planning for worship ministry.
  • Establish 3 to 5 annual ministry growth goals that align with church’s mission and vision.
  • Develop, share and implement plans to accomplish annual goals.
  • Develop standardized process / timelines for engaging Senior Pastor, staff and volunteer teams in both long-range and weekly worship planning.

 

Worship Ministry Team Development and Leading

  • Develop and lead the following worship ministry teams and implement associated outcomes:
  • Worship Design Team – Team meets every two weeks and is responsible for planning and enhancing annual, seasonal and weekly worship service experiences.  This includes incorporation of the arts and special worship-related themes, graphics and church-wide decorations.  Team typically consists of Director of Worship and Music, Senior Pastor, Worship Elder, lead visual creative member of the Audio Visual Team and members who are “idea people” and gifted in arts, drama, video etc.      
  • Worship Planning Team – Team meets weekly and is responsible for determining the tactical parts of the weekly worship services, with the Director of Worship and Music taking the lead in preplanning the order of worship for all services.  Team typically consists of Director of Worship and Music, Senior Pastor and other staff as necessary.      

Audio Visual Team – Team meets weekly and is responsible for execution of Audio Visual components of worship services.  Team typically consists of Director of Worship and Music and lead visual creative member (both of whom are liaisons between the Worship Design and Audio Visual Teams), lead audio member and other support team members.  

  • Develop and successfully implement effective spiritual development and assimilation practices to mobilize members in participating in ministry teams.

 

Music Ministry Planning

  • Lead long-range planning for music ministry (including all music groups).
  • Establish 3 to 5 annual ministry growth goals that align with church’s mission and vision.
  • Develop, share and implement plans to accomplish annual goals.
  • Develop standardized process / timelines for engaging Senior Pastor, staff and volunteer teams in both long-range and weekly music planning.

 

Music Ministry Leading (Traditional Service)

  • Lead planning for all components of traditional service to include music, instrumentalists, and vocalists for  worship
  • Collaborate with and oversee the work of the music ministry staff and volunteers
  • Guide and strengthen the traditional choir through musical growth, spiritual maturity, training, personal support and identifying potential new members /instrumentalists
  • Coordinate and lead rehearsals for traditional services
  • Conduct choir and/or instrumentalists for traditional service
  • Oversee the planning and coordination of outreach programs using the talents and skills of those serving in the Music Ministry

 

Music Ministry Leading (Contemporary Service)

  • Lead planning for all aspects of the contemporary service.
  • Lead all contemporary services in tandem with worship team.
  • Lead and strengthen worship team through musical growth, spiritual maturity, training, personal support and identifying potential new members.
  • Lead selection of all music and rehearsals (including all scheduling and preplanning).
  • Prepare all music (sheet music or chord charts) for services.
  • Plan and lead community outreach programs.

 

Other Ministry Support

  • Lead (with assistance from volunteers) all children’s choirs.
  • Lead (with assistance from volunteers) Youth Band.
  • Provide worship and music ministry support (with assistance from volunteers) for Vacation Bible School.
  • Provide worship and music ministry support (with assistance from volunteers) for church-wide events, retreats and special events.

 

Growth and Learning

  • Identify and attend conferences to further develop the worship experience and music ministries – and effectively incorporate information learned.
  • Keep up to date with and incorporate new musical arrangements and songs.

 

Administration

  • Maintain annual budget.
  • Lead all ministry team meetings, choir and worship team meetings and rehearsals.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and monthly Session meetings.
  • Promote all worship events throughout the church (and community as appropriate).
  • Purchase and maintain worship and music related resources.
  • Ensure all instruments and Audio Visual equipment is maintained.
  • Perform other administration duties needed to effectively manage position requirements.
