Job Summary


The Director of Worship and Arts will lead, manage, and nurture the worship & arts ministry and ministry staff in a professional, efficient manner that honors God. The Director of Worship & Arts will work under the direction of the Managing Executive Director and in partnership with the Senior Pastor to implement the vision and manage the day-to-day operations of SJUMC.


Required Functions


  • Oversee the WORSHIP AND ARTS Ministries (Staff and Volunteers)
  • Implement the congregation’s vision for ministry through leading and managing all worship and arts ministries staff persons
  • Ensure that the church’s worship and arts ministries are aligned with the church’s vision, and that ministry resources (human and financial) are aligned towards fulfilling the vision
  • Ensure vision alignment between worship and arts ministries and all other church ministry areas: adult, youth, children, pastoral care, missions, outreach, etc.
  • Oversee the creation of new ministries, identifying staff and/or volunteer leaders and establishing ministry teams to lead new ministries
  • Lead and Direct staff members in recruiting and equipping volunteers; maintain regular and personal connections with key volunteer leaders
  • Ensure all ministries, systems, and operations comply with biblical principles, best practices, church policies, ministry priorities, and civil laws 
  • Assist the Senior Pastor to develop vision for worship and arts
  • Report regularly to the Senior Management Team help implement strategy
  • Provide information necessary for key decisions regarding worship and arts
  • Provide impetus for a regular strategic planning and goal process, and implement procedures to insure vision and ministry alignment through the church
  • Offer tools and information for communicating vision, direction and progress to the leadership of St. James UMC
  • Potentially serve as member of Senior Management Team to guide staff in vision casting and delivering on goals


Other Responsibilities


  • Perform all other duties assigned by the Managing Executive Director and/or Senior Pastor


Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university required, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Previous ministry leadership experience required
  • Experience in successfully leading and managing people and teams, including planning, team-building, developing and maintaining budgets, creating and managing operating plans
  • Leadership and management skills appropriate for a director level position
  • Computer literate, with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office software
  • Strong commitment to the Christian faith and to the theology of the United Methodist Church; familiarity with the United Methodist Church structure, mission opportunities, and resources is helpful
  • Willing to adhere to the St. James UMC Staff Policies and Statement of Ethics and to be loyal to the Senior Pastor, the SMT, and to St. James UMC vision, values and mission
