Job Description:




The Middle School Ministry at Mars Hill is expressed through Fifty6 [5th + 6th grade programming], and The.element [7th + 8th grade programming]. This position will lead and oversee The.element ministry at Mars Hill, as well collaborate with the Fifty6 Pastor to provide supervision, strategy, priorities, and development for Mars Hill middle school students as a whole.


As pastor of The.element and co-leader of our Middle School ministry, you’ll provide leadership through vision, strategy, structure, and priorities in all efforts related to the Mars Hill middle school populations by developing and implementing initiatives for students, accounting for the unique, formative needs associated with this developmental life-stage.


Additionally, you’ll identify key transition points between the Mars Hill Kids, Middle School, and High School + Post-High School initiatives; and seek collaborative initiatives where The.element/Middle School ministry can work in concert with other Mars Hill ministries.





  • Minimum of 2 years of pastoral experience
  • Demonstrated spirit for strategic exploration, innovation, and change
  • Proven ability to create and successfully implement new programs
  • Proven ability to unite staff and volunteers around a common mission and to appropriately delegate authority and responsibility to achieve that mission
  • Ability to thrive in a highly relational environment, deriving energy from and drawing others into community
  • Passion for and proven experience in developing others; providing strategic initiatives that connect and nurture adults, emerging adults, volunteers, and interns
  • Passion for excellence in both oral and written communication
  • Ability to engage difficult issues and individuals, courageously shepherding people toward wholeness


Education requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required. Master’s degree in a ministry-related field preferred.
  • Conversant in pre-teen and adolescent issues (theological, sociological, developmental, cultural)
  • Knowledge of and exposure to adult related pastoral care ministries






  • A worldview that is aligned with the vision, mission, directions, and narrative theology of Mars Hill
  • Able to synthesize and think critically about theological, developmental, and sociological issues associated with the church and pre-teen and adolescent ministry
  • Able to understand, appreciate, and implement collaborative transitions with Mars Hill Kids, Mars Hill Students, and Adult Life ministries



  • Demonstrates a deep and consistent rule of life for all things formational
  • Proven ability to lead, modeling a way of life [philosophies and conduct] that inspires others to follow

1. Co-Lead All Aspects Of The.element/Middle School Ministry [15%]

  • Set vision, goals, and expectations for The.element and Middle School ministry and monitor performance against established goals
  • Design structures and schedules that support and respond to students, volunteers, and families
  • Collaborate with other Mars Hill Pastors to ensure age-appropriate and positive transitions for students and families that promote personal and family formation
  • Ensuring that all events support the broader program and content scope and sequence and that volunteers are adequately trained and utilized


2. Co-Lead Design and Nurture Of The.element/Middle School Volunteer Culture [30%]

  • Develop structures and processes that support relational environments for The.element/Middle School students [LifeGroups and Families]
  • Recruit, interview, and place new volunteers
  • Provide and model pastoral relationships and leadership for The.element/Middle School students and volunteers
  • Collaborate with other MHS Pastors in designing and delivering on a yearly volunteer training arc
  • Collaborate with other MHS Pastors to create strategies, processes, and policies for the development of safe relational environments for volunteers and students
  • Mentor The.element/Middle School interns and residents as described in the Mars Hill Intern and Resident Mentor Guide and as assigned by Kids + Students Director


3. Deliver Pastoral Care To The.element/Middle School Students, Parents, And Families [20%]

  • Provide pastoral care, crisis management, crisis intervention, and resource connection
  • Anticipate and respond to the crisis needs of this constituency


4. Develop Content That Is Theologically Sound, Developmentally Appropriate, And Culturally Relevant [25%]

  • Collaborate with MHS Pastors and the MHK + MHS Program Manager to establish a content and programmatic scope and sequence
  • Create teaching arcs and programming that nurture the spiritual formation of The.element/Middle School students
  • Develop resources that assist students, parents, and families


5. Participate As A Fully Invested Member Of The Life Development Team And Larger Mars Hill Team [10%]

  • Participate in ministry-wide events and activities as necessary
  • Participate and take personal initiative in staff development and other educational opportunities, maintaining an excellent understanding of pre-teen and adolescent culture
  • Assist the Students team with other tasks and projects under the direction of the Kids + Students Director
  • Teach the underlying vision and theology driving program strategy in all available areas of the Mars Hill community
  • Carry out pastoral responsibilities [as needed] such as: weddings, funerals, Child Dedication services, baptisms, and pastoral appointments
  • Attend scheduled team meetings
  • Assist with tasks and projects as they arise
  • Participate in cross-functional ministry teams
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required

FLSA Status: Salaried, exempt

Position Status: Full-time

Office Hours: Regular office hours [8:30am-5pm, Monday-Thursday] and other scheduled times
