Title: Pastor or Director of Children’s Ministries.

*Position title will be determined based upon experience, education and other demonstrated qualifications.

Principle Functions: The leader for Children’s Ministries shall be responsible for providing supervisory oversight of the “Total Children’s Ministry” and be responsible for the development, administration and coordination of all ministries involving children from birth through 6th grade.

The leader shall be a strong leader in the area of spiritual-life development for children. He/she shall develop and implement a plan where every child can discover, grow and sustain his/her spiritual life.

The leader will oversee the process and planned activities that provide for an effective children’s ministry contributing to the fulfillment of the mission and vision of Westwood Baptist Church.

Westwood Baptist Church is affiliated with the Baptist General Conference (Converge Worldwide) and the Columbia Baptist Conference (Converge Northwest). It is located in Olympia, Washington and has been ministering to people in the greater Olympia area for over three decades. The church averages a Sunday attendance of approximately 1,000. The Senior Pastor, Lee Forstrom, has been at Westwood for 35 years. Other staff members include Executive Pastor and Pastors of Discipleship and Leadership Development, Students, Global Outreach, Evangelism, Assimilation and Worship & Creative Arts Ministries; Directors for Women, Technology and Creative Arts/Communications Ministries. Westwood is now seeking a skilled leader to provide leadership and coordination to a vibrant children’s ministry.

Key characteristics of the kind of person who should fill this role include:
1. Spiritual Qualities: Westwood is seeking a spiritual leader who has the ability to approach the ministry with the Supremacy of Christ and the Gospel of Christ being uppermost in mind. Qualities of humility, love and a caring spirit are also key to this ministry.
2. Personal Qualities: The leader for this ministry should be friendly, approachable, open to suggestions, understanding of others opinions, have effective decisive decision making skills, encouraging, creative, energetic, able to motivate others, enthusiastic, reverent, possessed of a good sense of humor, an excellent communicator and listener, adaptable, flexible and demonstrate effective conflict resolution skills.
3. Theologically Oriented: Pastor John Piper recently wrote the following: “A spiritual leader knows that all of life, down to its smallest detail, has to do with God. If we are to lead people to see and reflect God’s glory, we must think theologically about everything. Leaders must have a theological standpoint that helps give coherence to all things. This will give the leader a stability that keeps them from being knocked off their feet by sudden changes in circumstances or new winds of doctrine. The leader knows enough about God and His ways that things generally fit into a pattern and make sense even when they are unpleasant. So the leader does not throw up their hands but points the way onward to God.” Colossians 3:17 says, “Do all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” First Corinthians 2:16 speaks of the spiritual person as having the mind of Christ.
4. Training and Experience: It would be desirable if the person had formal training in the ministry; training and experience skillfully communicating God’s Word to both children and adult volunteers and be able to lead and organize people.

The following speaks to the specific tasks for this position:
1. Accountability: The Children’s Ministry leader shall be directly accountable to the Executive Pastor. The successful candidate shall be a leader for the area of spiritual-life development for children.
