They must be skilled in Christ-centered teaching, with a proven ability to make the word of God relevant in the lives of youth. While the focus is to shepherd a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate program for youth that intentionally enfolds them into the life of the larger congregation and the world, we expect this person to work in concert with colleagues on the family ministry team and develop an active partnership with parents.

Key Responsibilities:

Christian Formation

  • Engage in strategies for reaching out to youth within and outside of the church to draw them in
  • Encourage students to act on their faith and participate in programs/service outside of church
  • Partner across departments to envision and enact opportunities for our church to be more purposefully intergenerational and missional in our outreach and service efforts
  • Intentionally cultivate relationships with other non-First Pres youth ministry programs

Community Life

  • Develop/maintain student events designed to engage and deepen the student community
  • Encourage/plan regular student contact work with staff and advisors
  • Encourage and develop plans for intergenerational participation in events, worship etc.
  • Provide pastoral care and counseling with youth and parents; partnering with other colleagues as necessary
  • Maintain regular contact with parents in person, email, and occasional parent ministry meetings
  • Organize youth appreciation events, training, etc.

Leadership

  • Serve as Team Leader for the Family Ministries Department
  • Serve on the Ministry Alignment Team, a group of staff that considers issues facing the larger context of the whole church
  • Meet regularly with youth staff for supervision, learning, program planning, event oversight, pastoral care, administration, and communication.
  • Recruit and equip advisors and other volunteers in partnership with youth staff
  • Coordinate with department administrative assistant for planning, budgeting and communication
  • Work with the Director of Administration & Staff and Session department to craft annual budget
  • Coordinate activities with the Director of Music Ministries for youth

  • Possess a solid theology and philosophy of youth ministry and how it fits into the larger life of the church
  • Demonstrated passion for teenagers in all aspects of their lives - possess a natural, relational affinity for students, finding it as comfortable to simply “hang out” with students as it is to teach and disciple them
  • Ability to shape and communicate a clear vision for students, their families, and advisors and translate that into effective programs
  • Flexible, creative, and resourceful
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication skills (one-on-one settings, small groups, and large groups)
