Job Description:


-       To help parents  create the desire in our children for a genuine relationship with Christ which will enable them to grow in faith to serve God

-       To teach a Bible based curriculum and encourage a Biblical-based life style

-       To promote prayer, personal Bible reading, and Christian fellowship among the children

-       To encourage and equip parents to develop a biblical worldview in their children

-       To provide opportunities for ministry leadership, outreach to the community, and connection to mission field


-       Accountable directly to Senior Pastor and SPR (Staff Parish Relations)

-       This position will be evaluated every 6 months


-       Must possess a desire to teach and mentor children with patience and an accepting heart

-       Must have a solid biblical background with Bachelors Degree or comparable experience, preferably in children’s ministry, Christian education or related areas

-       Must possess strong interpersonal and relational skills with the ability to effectively communicate and work with the Children’s Council and church leadership

-       Must possess strong administrative and organizational skills, exhibiting attention to detail with an eye for excellence

-       Should be a self-starter, good at multi-tasking and prioritizing projects

-       Should ensure all tasks/projects initiated are successfully completed

-       Should be willing and able to work at a fast pace within a variety of settings and circumstances, with composure and flexibility

-       Must exercise discernment and wise judgment

-       Should be ever conscious of the need for confidentiality

-       Must be able to effectively recruit, screen, train, encourage, motivate and mentor volunteers

-       Must have the ability to work collaboratively and positively with the church staff and other church ministries


Serve as Chair of Children’s Council to implement and oversee Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, DUMC Nursery and other children’s activities and programs

Sunday School

-       Recruit, screen, train and motivate teachers and other volunteers

-       Choose and implement curriculum for nursery through 6th Grade

-       Evaluate rooms and class sizes for best use of facility space and ensure classrooms are consistent with safety standards, cleanliness and a good learning environment

-       Organize “Rally Day” (first day of Sunday School each year)

-       Facilitate corporate Chapel worship at least once per Quarter

-       Initiate a follow-up program to reach out to children and families who have irregular attendance in Sunday School and/or worship


Vacation Bible School

-       Choose curriculum and schedule the dates of VBS

-       Recruit and screen VBS teachers and volunteers

-       Organize and oversee the registration, music, games, crafts, snacks and decorations, utilizing the Children’s  Council and other volunteers


-       Ensure the DUMC Nursery demonstrates at all times a visibly caring, quality environment in which parents are confident in leaving their children  in our care

-       Oversee Nursery Administration and direct Child Care Coordinator (CCC)

-       Assist CCC with recruiting and screening of nursery volunteers

-       Assist CCC  with scheduling of nursery volunteers for weekly worship services and other extra-

 Children’s Activities

-       Implement and oversee ongoing, extra-curricular children’s programs

-       Liaise with Children’s Choir Director

Pastoral Responsibilities

-       Notify Senior Pastor as to DUMC children in hospital, visitation needs, home visits, etc.

 Administrative Duties

-       Staff, schedule and chair bi-monthly Children’s Council meetings, or more frequent as required

-       Develop and submit the Children’s Ministry annual budget

-       Record/monitor expenses to ensure Children’s Ministry operates  within approved budget

-       Select and secure all supplies, equipment and resources for Children’s Ministry administration

-       Select and secure all supplies, equipment and resources for Nursery administration

-       Create and maintain yearly Sunday School attendance database

-       Ensure “Safe Sanctuaries” policies are enforced for all children’s activities

-       Submit  annual report on the activity of Children’s Ministry at DUMC

-       Attend staff meetings and other meetings as required

-       Oversee advertising of Summer Camp opportunities

-       Involvement in the planning and organization of our DUMC Family Christmas Eve worship service and other children’s events identified throughout the year

-       Develop and/or coordinate all announcements and promotions of Children’s Ministry

-       Develop and/or coordinate updates to DUMC Children’s Ministry website

-       Coordinate with Church Sexton on matters relating to church facilities
