Executive Director, Berkeley Christian Counselors

Position Overview

The Executive Director provides oversight and operational leadership, vision, management, and guidance to accomplish the mission of Berkeley Christian Counselors (BCC). BCC is a ministry of First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley. BCC offers Christian based counseling to members of the church and community through licensed counselors and non-licensed counselors (Interns, Trainees and Paraprofessionals); equips new Christian based therapists; and serves as a referral source.


Key Responsibilities

BCC Ministry Leadership

  • Provide vision and oversight to meet the objectives of BCC
  • Integrate the mission of BCC with the policies and mission of the church
  • Create a culture of integrity, high ethical standards, and competence, with teaming and collaboration to serve the needs of clients and the counselors
  • Develop programs for attracting and retaining counselors through clinical excellence and by providing opportunities for professional growth
  • Develop best practices for clinical and operational policies and procedures by benchmarking other counseling centers
  • Develop a variety of services to fulfill the clinical needs in the church and community such as support groups, classes, workshops, and seminars
  • Establish and maintain performance expectations for the Clinical Director, counseling supervisors, licensed and non-licensed counselors, and the administrative assistant
  • Prepare and conduct performance evaluations for the Clinical Director and the administrative assistant



  • Define, implement, assess, and improve all operational procedures
  • Establish and maintain policies and procedures for:
  • Responsiveness to clients and scheduling first appointments
  • Client fees
  • Collection of fees, missed appointments, timeliness, report writing, etc.
  • Deploying and tracking Deacon’s Fund allocations
  • Facility management
  • Data retention and reporting
  • Whether and how to support clients using mental health insurance 
  • Provide reports at agreed upon intervals as requested
  • Identify and mitigate restraints to serving more client needs and enabling more counselor hours


Counselor Management

  • Recruit licensed and non-licensed counselors in partnership with the Clinical Director
  • Provide input and pre-approve performance evaluations for the counseling supervisors and counselors
  • Define, manage and assess the effectiveness of the compensation program for Interns and licensed counselors
  • Ensure having an inventory of counselor skill sets which addresses the needs of clients coming to BCC
  • Establish and manage goals for the counselors to generate new clients



  • Develop and execute a marketing plan utilizing a wide-range of communication vehicles including the BCC website, mailing campaigns, brochures, maximizing our Google presence, pulpit talks, media and online articles, etc.
  • Develop ongoing awareness of BCC among other churches, counselors, clinics, medical centers, etc.
  • Create partnerships with educational institutions offering M.A. programs in psychology such as Fuller Seminary
  • Measure marketing effectiveness and implement changes as necessary



  • Establish the annual budget with the Associate Pastor for Caring Ministries
  • Oversee BCC’s financial accountability to the church:
  • Establish and oversee all financial policies and procedures
  • Maintain financial records


Partner with First Pres Ministries

  • Cultivate relations with First Pres Pastors, staff, church leaders and volunteers
  • Develop collaborative opportunities between BCC and other First Pres ministries, e.g., support groups, advising youth leaders, mission trips, etc.
  • Partner in developing response plans for community/church trauma issues
  • Plan and oversee education workshops, classes, seminars, and conferences for the church and community
  • Collaborate with the Caring Ministries Department



  • Serve as a secondary resource for conducting client intakes
  • Maintain relationships with Bay Area counselors/centers which are referral resources to/from BCC
  • Comply with all First Pres church and employee policies and procedures
  • Assist with church-wide communication efforts as needed
  • Work in partnership with the First Pres HR staff, Finance staff or Director of Administration & Staff as appropriate for:
  • Hiring decisions
  • Financial matters
  • Administrative oversight
  • Other duties as requested


Reports to:           Associate Pastor for Caring Ministries

Supervises:           Clinical Director, Berkeley Christian Counselors

                                Administrative Assistant for BCC

Schedule:              20 hours per week salaried position, with benefits


Desired Background and Skill Set

  • Growing and deepening faith in Jesus Christ and a demonstrated heart for ministry and the mission of BCC, consistent with the basic Christian tenets advocated by First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley
  • Experience in supervising professional level employees
  • Demonstrated management skills in financial administration and organization
  • General breadth of knowledge necessary to run a small business
  • Creative problem solver with ability to collaborate effectively and foster teamwork
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Familiarity with marketing, business, and web-authoring software
  • Background in psychology or counseling skills strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Bachelors degree
