Job Summary

The Director of Youth Ministry directs and provides dynamic growth, leadership and oversight to the middle school and high school students of St James UMC and its community.  The Director will effectively interact with the students, community leaders, staff members and the parents of the youth ministry to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.


Required Functions

  • Develop ministries that foster students’ growth in five key areas:  Radical Hospitality, Passionate Worship, Intentional Discipleship, Risk-taking Service and Extravagant Generosity
  • Cultivate an environment that attracts middle school and high school youth to be part of the Body of Christ
  • Participate in the creation of communication of an executable vision for the youth ministries
  • Able to recruit qualified adult volunteers to assist with vision
  • Devote personal and professional life to being an example of what it means to follow Jesus Christ and walk in His Grace


Other Responsibilities

  • Develop networks in the community with the local middle schools and high schools
  • Establish partnerships with local parachurch organizations to offer a channel for students to become involved in the local church
  • Partner with other ministries within St James UMC to form a cohesive ministry unit
  • Participate in the creation of annual budget and effectively manage expenses to accomplish goals
  • Continually explore opportunities on how to grow the youth ministry and capture the students’ hearts to pursue a personal relationship with Jesus Christ


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Five years of successful church youth ministry experience preferred
  • Strong commitment to the Christian faith and to the theology of the United Methodist Church; familiarly with the United Methodist Church structure, mission opportunities, and resources is helpful
  • Willing to adhere to the St  James UMC Staff Policies and Statement of Ethics, to be loyal to the Senior Pastor and church leadership, and faithful to St James UMC vision, values and mission


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to communicate to large crowds
  • Ability to participate in athletic activities as required for relationship-building in youth ministries
