Job Description:

The West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church is seeking a Director for Camp Wesley, a United Methodist Camp and Retreat Center in west central Ohio. 


The candidate will have a deep Christian faith consistent with the standards of the United Methodist Church, vision, energy and passion for the camp and retreat ministry, creative programming skills, great communication skills, a welcoming spirit of hospitality, and an unmistakable call into this ministry. The Director will oversee the entire ministry including summer program, financial and personnel management, building and grounds, food service and retreat groups. 


Camp Wesley is one of three camps in the West Ohio Conference of the UMC.  Our three camps work collaboratively towards accomplishing our shared vision to “serve all people for Christian birth, growth, and renewal.”  West Ohio Camps and Retreats offers a compensation package that includes a salary commensurate with experience, on-site housing and utilities, health insurance and retirement benefits.

Models standards and expectations of Christian leadership



Education and


Bachelor’s degree in related field                                               

Expertise and enthusiasm for program development                                               

Experience in a supervisory role of other adults                                               

History of effective recruiting, training and deployment of paid and unpaid  leadership                                               

Demonstrated commitment to inclusivity for all God’s people

Proven ability to manage the day to day operations of the site

Willingness and ability to obtain relevant professional certifications (First Aid/CPR;                                         Lifeguard; Food Safety; Level 1 Archery, etc.)





Ability to partner with lay and clergy leadership to establish fruitful partnerships

Ability to work in a team-based, strengths-based ministry environment

Clear understanding of your personal needs for motivation and for renewal                           

Ability to utilize technology effectively and efficiently

Ability to create and manage a budget

Ability to troubleshoot and repair minor maintenance issues

Positive attitude, attention to detail and commitment to excellence

Work as an agent of change, not a guardian of the status quo






DIRECTOR OF CAMP WESLEY – responsibilities:


In alignment with our United Methodist and West Ohio Conference vision to make disciples for the transformation of the world, and in partnership with the strategic initiatives set by the bishop/cabinet/connectional ministries:


I.                    Complete oversight of the day to day operations of Camp Wesley

  • Create and successfully manage an annual operations budget of approximately $250,000
  • Evaluate need for and implement hiring process of support staff in areas of maintenance, food service and waterfront
  • Supervise paid and unpaid support staff and seasonal staff
  • Lead partnership churches/groups through the process of event design, implementation, and evaluation
  • Provide exceptional,  radical hospitality to all camper groups, retreat groups, parents, supporters, donors and any other user groups
  • Maintain Camp Wesley accreditation with American Camp Association (ACA)


II.                  Design and drive processes for creation of a “culture of call” at Camp Wesley

  • Partner with Conference Director of Camping and Retreat Ministries and Conference Director of Discipleship Resources in creating a program of camp events that create an environment of invitation for campers and staff to explore their relationship and commitment to Jesus Christ, and their call


III.                Desired Outcomes

  • Foster an environment in which those at Camp Wesley are invited into relationship with Jesus
  • Annually maintain a balanced budget
  • Annually increase camper usage by a minimum of 5%
  • Annually welcome 10 new retreat groups
  • Camp Wesley would serve as a resource to the local church and the local community


IV.               Camp Wesley staff supervisory responsibilities:

  • Support Staff – Maintenance, Food Service, Lifeguards
  • Program Staff – Program Director, Summer Camp Staff
  • Volunteer staff
