Covenant Church
Job Description:

Covenant Church is a vibrant church in West Lafayette, Indiana, with 700-900 worshipers on a typical Sunday morning. Part of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, we are an unapologetically Christ-centered church that delights to worship God; teach the Scriptures; reach men, women, and children for Christ; form them as devoted Christ followers; and fling them out upon the world. While we are part of the Reformed tradition, we are neither theologically strident nor liturgically narrow. We prize the virtues of grace and humility. Our family is significantly shaped by the presence of Purdue University two miles from our building, and reflects the ethnic diversity of our college town.

Primary Responsibility Areas and Qualifications Necessary to Fulfill Them:

Lead the congregation in Christ-centered, God-honoring worship

Leading the congregation with quiet confidence and humility into the presence of God; pastoring the congregation through worship rather than merely leading music or presenting a program

- A vibrant and growing relationship with the Lord

- A heart of humility coupled with a passion to honor Christ

- Minimum of five years experience in worship ministry leadership

- Demonstrated ability to lead congregations in their worship of God

Lead in the creation and execution of Sunday worship services

Crafting fluid, thematic, artful worship services - grounded in and informed by the preaching text - that draw on the best of worship practices and resources from across the ages and around the world

-Appreciation for the Arts, as well as for both contemporary and traditional music styles, and a desire to craft integrated worship services

-Understanding of music dynamics and composition and the ability to improvise

-Bachelor’s degree in music (or equivalent experience) necessary; theological education beneficial (ordination is not necessary)

-Demonstrated ability to plan blended worship services drawing on a wide breadth of worship elements and musical styles

Lead and pastor the Worship Arts Ministry teams

Shepherding teams (worship band, vocalists, choir, tech team, dance, drama, etc.) to be faithful stewards of their gifts in worship, to share in community, and to grow deeper in their own relationship with the Lord

-Christ-like interpersonal skills and relational maturity

-Team spirit and collaborative leadership style

-Organizational and planning skills

-Demonstrated ability to shepherd a diverse group of artful people in effective ministry

These are the three primary areas of responsibility for the Worship Arts Pastor role. In addition, leading our church family in its worship life will include overseeing our children’s music and arts programs, as well as providing for worship support for smaller groups (Elder retreats, leadership training events) and for special services (weddings, memorial services). We understand that any individual will have limits to his gifts and experience, and look to the Worship Arts Pastor to work in collaboration with others whose gifts are complementary to fulfill these responsibilities.

Covenant Church

Covenant Presbyterian Church was planted in West Lafayette, IN in 1958. At its inception it was affiliated with the United Presbyterian Church (USA), which later merged with another Presbyterian denomination to become the Presbyterian Church (USA). As an evangelical congregation within a mainline denomination, we found ourselves increasingly concerned with the denomination’s directions and its theological convictions. Following a two-year long discernment process, on the basis of both calling and conscience, Covenant voted in 2008 to s More...
