Countryside Bible Chapel
Job Description:
Countryside Bible Chapel (CBC) is prayerfully searching for a qualified teaching elder to join our local assembly as a full-time, paid member of the elder board. His main responsibilities will include preaching/teaching, shepherding/pasturing, and training/equipping other men within the assembly for ministry within the body.

Qualifications

• A mature believer with godly character and lifestyle as attested to by other believers, fellow workers, and associates (1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:1-9); he should be known as a faithful and servant whose life is an example to others (Luke 22:25-26; Galatians 5:16, 22-25).
• He agrees with the CBC doctrinal statement and also with the following practices, which distinguish us from many other churches (1 Timothy 4:6):
- Plurality of leadership – we have a board of elders who are responsible for the spiritual life of the fellowship, and a board of deacons, who are responsible for day-to-day physical and financial needs of the body.
- Priesthood of all believers – we do not distinguish between clergy and laity, and believe that the Holy Spirit imparts different spiritual gifts to each believer for the effective working of the local body (Eph. 4:11-12; 1 Peter 2:5,9; Rev. 1:6).
- Communion service – an important focus of worship at CBC, it is observed weekly as a time to worship and remember the Lord Jesus, pray, and sing, open to all believers who are not openly or willfully living in sin (1 Cor. 121:23-34).
- Autonomy of the local church, whose only head is Christ (Eph. 1:22-23, 5:23).
• He is a gifted preacher/teacher who is solidly grounded in the Word of God, with a sound literal hermeneutic (2 Timothy 4:2).
- He will be a proven expository teacher, able to consistently apply the truths of Scripture to the real-life situations faced by believers
- He will have an engaging speaking style that encourages believers to search the Scriptures and apply them in their own lives (Acts 17:11)
- His messages are challenging and encouraging to believers, but also compelling to any non-believers who listen.
- He will be part of an elder team, working with them to develop a long-term a preaching plan with a systematic approach and specific teaching goals to ensure that messages meet the perceived needs of the body; along with the other elders, he will ensure that messages are of sufficient quality.
- He will speak for a majority of Sunday’s initially.
- He will be ready to give his own testimony and able to deliver a clear gospel message and lead others to Christ.
- Participates in or assists in teaching adult classes as appropriate.
• He has a pastor’s heart and will work with the elder team to pray for and actively address the needs of the body (Galatians 6:2).
- He is an active listener and an encourager.
- He is sensitive to the needs of others and is an effective communicator.
- He will work with the elder team to provide pastoral (including pre-marital) counseling.
- With other members of the elder team, he will participate in visitations, especially involving those who are in hospital or confined to home.
- Along with the other elders, he is willing to lovingly confront sin within the body.
• He understands that a key aspect of his role as an elder is to train and equip other believers within the local body (Ephesians 4:11-13; 2 Timothy 2:2).
- With the other elders, he helps and encourages others within the local assembly not only to understand the basis of their own salvation but to boldly and clearly proclaim the gospel of salvation to unbelievers.
- He and the other elders are committed to help others discover and grow in their spiritual gifts; specifically, he takes time to work with other qualified men within the local assembly to develop their own preaching/teaching gift
• He is a team player, who works well with leaders and others within the assembly; he knows how to lead and influence without dominating or intimidating others (Romans 12:16-18; Galatians 5:26)
- He is dependable in all aspects of his ministry and actively participates in leadership activities, including elder and joint deacon/elder meetings
- He is an active listener and an encourager who incorporates the ideas of others.
- He understands that he is part of a preaching/teaching team; he ensures that his Sunday messages fit within the overall teaching program as determined in concert with the other elders.
- Participates in planning the various meetings of the church body.
- He is involved in all aspects of worship and actively supports others on the leadership team, even when he is not directly involved.
- Helps to envision and implement new ministry activities which fall within the mission of CBC.
- Communicates observations and concerns readily and openly.
- He is willing to lovingly confront others when necessary, while being open to criticism and willing to change, under the power of the Holy Spirit.
• He is accountable (1 Timothy 5:17; Hebrews 13:17).
- He serves with the other members of the elder team as a leader and partner, recognizing that each elder is accountable to the other elders on the team.
- He recognize that while the elder team has responsibility for the spiritual life of the local church, the Lord Jesus Christ is our ultimate authority.
- His performance will be reviewed on an annual basis by the elder team.
