Preschool Director

Program Philosophy and Religious Orientation:  The First Baptist Preschool operates as a ministry of the First Baptist Church.  It is a developmental half-day program.  Candidates must have a familiarity of and support of this model.  We are a religious based school and teach basic Christianity to our students.  Even though the denominations of the teachers vary, each class maintains a prayer time, songs, devotions and chapel for the children which supports the Bible and Christianity.  The Director is expected to have a personal faith in Jesus Christ as his or her Savior and Lord.  He or she will be a spiritual leader among the staff and should attend and be active in a local church.

Administrative Duties:  The Director is responsible for the majority of administrative tasks involved in running the school.  This includes such tasks as processing enrollments, record keeping, and so on.  The Director is also responsible for keeping all students’ files up to date, including medical and emergency contact information, and records of any behavioral incidents. 

Management Duties:  The Preschool Director is considered part of the church staff, attends staff meetings, and reports directly to the Lead Pastor of First Baptist Church.  The Director is also a member of the Preschool Board.  He/she trains and supervises all staff.  The Director also makes the work schedule and ensures guidelines for ratios of staff to student are met, safety and security standards are maintained and school/parent communication lines are open.  In all duties, maintaining the children’s health and well-being while at school is the Director’s first and foremost consideration.

Instructional Duties:  The Director is responsible for overseeing the curriculum used in the school.  This means developing or reviewing teachers’ lesson plans, or choosing curriculum to be implemented school -wide.  The Director may provide in-house trainings for the staff. He or she may also fill in for a teacher or assistant when a substitute is not available.

Communicating with Parents:    The Director is a family’s first contact with the school.  He/she will meet with parents to introduce the preschool to them and explain the school’s program philosophy, policies, fees, regulations and curriculum.  The Director deals with parental concerns and questions and is responsible for conveying any policy changes to parents.  He/she creates and sends out a monthly newsletter to all families in the school.  He/she also speaks to parents about behavioral concerns, injuries or other incidents that occur during the school day.  With the help of the Financial Secretary, the director also oversees the bills and collection of payment for services. 

Compliance Duties:  The Director is responsible for ensuring that the school is in full compliance with all licensing and safety regulation.   

Hours:  The school operates Monday- Friday for a half-day program (MWF/TTH).  There is also an optional after-school program that runs Monday through Thursday until 3:00.  Ages of children are 2 years and 9 months through Pre-Kindergarten.  Preschool staff meeting is held once a month, Church staff meeting is held once per week and Preschool Board meeting is held once a month.  The Director participates in and/or leads these meetings.  The school year is from September- June with a month of Summer School in July.

The Director Position is full-time (7 hour per day) and year –round.  The salary is determined by education and experience.  Medical and retirement benefits are available. 


  • Candidate must be a Christian who is actively involved in a local church. 
  • Candidate must have at least 3 years of experience as a Director in a developmental preschool and/or be familiar with the developmental philosophy and be in agreement with it. 
  • Candidate must meet the State of California director qualifications which are as follows:
  1.  Director must be 18 years of age or older with the educational requirements for a Preschool Director which are:  High School graduation or GED and 15 semester units at an accredited college in specified early childhood education classes. 
  2. 3 units shall be in administration or staff relations and
  3. 12 units shall include courses that cover areas of child growth and development; child, family and community; and program/curriculum and
  4. Also required are four years of teaching experience in a licensed center or comparable group child care program.  OR
  5. Two years of experience are required if the director has an AA degree with a major in child development OR
  6. A Child Development Site Supervisor Permit or Child Development Program Director permit issued by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
  7. Director shall complete 15 hours of health and safety training pursuant to Health and Safety Code Section 1596.866
  8. Director must undergo a health screening, including a required tuberculosis test.
  9. Director must complete a Criminal Background screening.
