Purpose and Scope

The purpose of this position is to make disciples of Jesus among the middle school and high school students, their parents, and the Student Ministries staff of Greater Portland Bible Church. To this end, the Student Ministry Director will plan, implement, and oversee a ministry strategy which presents Jesus to non-Christian students as the only way of salvation and to Christian students as the only Lord to be followed and the only sure source of meaning and purpose in life.



The Student Ministry Director will function in this role within the philosophy of ministry of the church. This philosophy includes but is not limited to the following:

  • We will seek to be responsive to Jesus as the true “Senior Pastor” of this church.
  • We will present the Bible as the only authoritative disclosure of Jesus’ direction for life and ministry.
  • We will minister within the church and to the world through collaborative team structures.
  • We will strive to give equal time, resources, effort, and emphasis to evangelism and to Christian nurture.
  • We will strive to make healthy relationships a recognized characteristic of our church and the primary context for ministry to one another and the world.



The Student Ministries Director is responsible to the Lead Pastor and the Council of Elders. He/She oveersees the Middle School and High School Team Leaders and through them, the Student Ministries staff.


Desired qualifications, skills, and gifts

  • A vibrant and growing personal relationship with Jesus.
  • An authentic love for, patience with, and good understanding of preteens and teenagers.
  • Evidence of Christ-likeness in words and behavior (honesty, openness, acceptance, trustworthiness, truthfulness, etc.).
  • Committed to vision, values, and beliefs of the church.
  • Practices servant leadership.
  • Spiritual gifts of teaching, exhortation, leadership, and/or administration are desirable.
  • Supportive of other church staff and volunteers.
  • Team-oriented—able to collaborate with a large team of volunteers.
  • Administrative ability.
  • Able to work with a wide variety of “constituents”: pastoral staff, volunteer workers, parents and grandparents, preteens, teenagers, etc.
  • Pass a background check and/or other screenings as requested.



  • Plan, implement, and oversee the church’s ministry to middle school and high school students within the philosophy of ministry of the church.
  • Maintain an intimate and growing relationship with Jesus.
  • Shepherd the personal, spiritual, and ministry growth of the Middle School and High School Team Leaders and, in collaboration with them, the student ministries staff.
  • Involve staff and students in the decisions, plans, and implementation of all student ministry programs and events as much as possible.
  • Become familiar with the families of the students and communicate with parents regarding the well-being of their child as well as the goals, activities, and events of the student ministry.
  • Be available to staff, students, and families for counsel or crisis.
  • Provide for at least one weekend retreat and one summer camp and/or short-term mission experience annually for each student group (high school and middle school).
  • Ensure that all student ministry events and activities are conducted safely and within the liability policies of the church and that staff and volunteers are trained in these policies.
  • Serve as a liaison with people, organizations, and resources both within and outside the church that relate to preteens and teenagers and student ministry.
  • Respond promptly to communication from students, staff, parents, church staff, elders, and others associated with this ministry.
  • Attend scheduled Directors’ Team meetings and church staff meetings as possible.
  • Be an active participant in the services and events of the larger church community as able.


Time requirements

It is estimated that this ministry will currently require an average of 20 hours per week, including Sunday morning and Wednesday evening.


Training and resources

The Student Ministry Director is encouraged to:

  • Attend appropriate regional and national seminars and workshops on student ministry as the church budget allows;
  • Purchase magazines, books, tapes, and other resources for professional development and to distribute among student ministry staff and volunteers;
  • Keep a journal or a file of written notes to pass on to a future student ministry director or assistant.
