Reports to: Family Pastor
Supervises:
Stephen's Ministry leaders (and/or others trained to provide Christian support and
friendship in times of need).
Support group leaders (Faithful and True for Women, Faithful and True for Men,
Harbor of Hope, Military Support Group, Divorce Care, Treasured Promises).
Relates Closely With:
Pastoral staff members.
Adult Ministry Team.
Local Impact Team.
Shepherding Team (serves as a member of this team).
Lay leaders involved in support groups, counseling and care.
Counselors in the community who partner with WBC.
Responsibilities:
Provide strategic leadership for WBC support group ministries - 20 hours per
week:
o Coach, oversee and evaluate existing support groups at WBC.
o Strategically initiate new support group initiatives in order to meet the
needs of our changing community. This would include the development of
new support groups, as well as considering overarching models such as
"Celebrate Recovery."
o Develop, lead and expand our current ministry of Treasured
Promises/DivorceCare/Single Parent Support that is held on Monday
evenings. This will involve partnering with a variety of other staff
members, as well as guiding multiple volunteer leadership teams.
Provide pastoral counseling to those within our church family - 10 hour per week:
o Provide initial intake and assessment for new pastoral counseling needs.
o Partner with other pastoral staff members and local Christian counselors as
needed in each situation.
Equip pastoral staff and lay leaders with Biblical counseling best practices - 10
hours per week:
o Provide a variety of coaching, training, and support for the pastoral staff,
Elders and key lay leaders to sharpen their Biblical counseling skills and
insights.
o Provide equipping support for Shepherding Team members and
Community Group leaders in regards to recognizing signs of dysfunction
and life crisis, as well as "first response" skills when serious situations
arise within a community group context.
o Lead the existing Stephen Ministry and work with the pastoral staff to
determine the role of this ministry in our long-term pastoral care structure.
o Partner with Local Impact for additional resources to support those in
crisis.
o Develop strategic partnerships as appropriate with local Christian care
organizations and local Christian counselors.
o Communicate with pastoral staff and the Board of Elders as needed in
matters of church discipline/restoration.
Core Competencies:
Be committed to holiness and develo personal walk with God in order to
model and lead others in their faith.
If married, prioritize their ministry to their spouse above all others.
If a parent, will be committed to disciple his or her children to know God and love
Him. The active and strategic discipleship of your own children must be a higher
priority than your discipleship of others.
Ability to relate with and partner with different constituencies such as other staff
members, professional care givers in the community, lay leaders, and people of all
ages who may be receiving care from the church.
Ability to build and equip volunteer teams.
Gifted as a trainer and equipper, not just a "do-er."
Ability to develop long range plans, and carry them through to completion.
Training and/or experience in pastoral/Biblical counseling required.
