What Did You Say?By: Frank Damazio
Communication is one of the most important tools in a leader’s arsenal. Think about it – you can have the most impressive and grand vision, a brilliant five-phase strategy to make it happen and even a host of workers at your disposal. But none of that matters if you cannot communicate that vision and strategy to your team.
A team that cannot understand its leader or support the vision will fracture and pursue other ideas. It’s not that they dislike the leader or they want to breed discord and argument. The issue is that they do not understand what the leader wants them to support and how the actions they are being asked to take will help that idea gain momentum and be a success.
Solid communication skills are critical for leaders, especially when it comes to communicating your vision and strategy for bringing that vision from idea to process to implementation. Can you explain your vision in a simple, easy to read statement? Is it memorable? Is it repeatable?
Leaders must receive a clear vision in order to communicate a clear vision. We make a deliberate decision to wait on God, to quiet our minds and hearts and simply sit and eagerly listen for what God is saying – and persevere in waiting and listening. The vision cannot be created by copying someone else’s vision or just compiling vision ideas from other books on vision. You’ll find your vision when you have an encounter with God that sets you on a course no person or force on earth can stop. That kind of encounter happens only when you wait on God, hungry for Him and His vision.
Once you have received the vision, you must communicate it. Paint a complete picture. Include the start date and identify the milestones that everyone can recognize. What are the signs that say, “We’re making progress” and ultimately: “We’re there!”
Don’t complicate it, don’t rationalize it, and don’t water it down. Be confident in your vision and communicate it with strength.
