How to Energize Your Team

By: Frank Damazio
Life happens in seasons. One moment it’s up, another moment it’s a little slower; it drags and then jolts into activity. We as leaders get worn down with life, trials, adversity, routines, deadlines, task lists and a number of other pressures. We need to refresh our hearts and refresh our work environment.

Leaders set the pace for the rest of the team. The atmosphere you bring into a room, a relationship or a conversation sets the tone. If you are energetic, the team will be energized. If you are dull and worn, the team will likely drag.

Here are a few ways that you the leader can energize your team.

1. Ask for input and let them try an idea!

I learn so much when I ask my leadership team to give me their input on what projects they would tackle or what process they might improve. One of the leader’s biggest challenges is delegation – being okay with people having their own ideas and even working toward their goals. The team finds more ownership and passion for what they do when they are given room to create and implement their ideas.

2. Open your door.

Leaders must build trust. A great way to do that is to always be open and clear in your communication and to be approachable. Communicate the vision clearly and show how the task you are asking them to do is making the vision possible. Take the time to communicate clearly what events are happening and why. Draw a clear line between where you are now and the vision for the future. Trust is built by sharing information.

3. Build a culture of appreciation.

Pass out a few gift cards to some team members just thanking them for their contribution to the team. Write a short note to a young leader encouraging him or her to keep up the good work. Every person brings something unique to the team. Draw that out by appreciating them and their distinct contribution to the team. It doesn’t take much but it goes a long way!
